The Legal Requirements for PPDS
Nurseries, schools and colleges as well as other food businesses must know if new rules for labelling of prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) apply to them. These legal requirements came into force on the 1st of October 2021. All food businesses that fall under the scope of PPDS will be required to label products with the name of the food and a full ingredients list and allergenic ingredients emphasised within it. Caterers must also comply with specific labelling requirements such as naming conventions, font size and precautionary allergen labelling.
PPDS applies to food or drink that is fully or partly enclosed by packaging, cannot be altered without opening or changing packing or ready for sale to the final consumer. Packaged items include:
- Breakfast pots
- Wrapped burgers
PPDS labelling also applies to multiple prepacked items within a packaged lunch. You cannot simply use one label for all individual items. There are exemptions for pre-ordered prepacked food such as school lunches that are made and packed to order for individual children. Food packaged at the consumer’s request also falls outside the scope of PPDS.
