A discount retailer has been fined nearly £1.2 million after pleading food safety offences and health and safety offences. The company was fined £660,00 for five food safety offences, £500,00 for one health and safety offence and costs of £30,409. An inspection of shop in Croydon, South London found mouse droppings on the shop floor and basement, food soaked with rat urine, gnawed packets of food (biscuits, popcorn, nut and sweets) repaired with sticky tape placed back on shelves for sales. Employees were also forced to carry heavy goods due to a broken lift. No risk assessment was carry out for this activity.
